Abstract
Information is presented which is based on the experimentally measured deformation pressures required for round-to-round axisymmetric extrusion of three titanium alloys; the alpha alloy Ti-5A1-2.5Sn, the alpha-beta alloy Ti-6A1-4V and the beta alloy Ti-13V-11Cr-3A1. All work was accomplished utilizing three inch diameter by five and one-half inch long billets and all billets were extruded through ZrO2 coated tool steel dies. The lubrication system was the same for all extrusions and consisted of a glass powder coating which was applied to the billet prior to heating, and an aluminum and graphite impregnated grease base container and die lubricant which was applied by swabbing immediately prior to extrusion. Extrusions were performed over a temperature range of 1500°F to 2150°F for reduction ratios from 6:1 to 20:1. Other process variables investigated were ram speed, die angle and container temperature.
