Genetics of the Photosynthetic Prokaryotes

Book cover Photosynthetic Prokaryotes

Part of the book series: Biotechnology Handbooks ((BTHA,volume 6))

Abstract

Photosynthetic prokaryotes exhibit a diversity of morphological and metabolic capabilities that deserve intensive genetic analysis. Members of the group are able to grow phototrophically and chemotrophically and can fix nitrogen. The availability of a repertoire of genetic systems now permits application of genetic technology to identifying the mechanisms governing photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, and membrane biogenesis within a group that includes multicellular as well as unicellular organisms.
