Sedimentation Equilibrium of Proteins in Density Gradients

Abstract

The technique of equilibrium density-gradient ultracentrifugation in the analytical ultracentrifuge was first described by Meselson, Stahl, and Vinograd in 1957 (Meselson et al., 1957). The method provides a thermodynamically rigorous procedure for the determination of the buoyant density, hydration, and solvated molecular weight of polymers having molecular weights larger than about 10,000.
