The Geology of Svalbard, the Western Part of the Barents Sea, and the Continental Margin of Scandinavia

  • Chapter
The Arctic Ocean

Abstract

The Svalbard Archipelago is located on the northwestern corner of the Barents Shelf (Fig. 1). Its position at the upturned edge of the Eurasian continental plate, opposite the Greenland continental block, and its long geological record, with evidence of major Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Cenozoic deformation, offer a potential for intercontinental correlation. Investigations of Svalbard have provided evidence of a long history of vertical and horizontal movement. These data supplemented with knowledge of the topography and structure of the neighboring sea floor helps us to reconstruct the evolution of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean Basins.
