Abstract
Cells within tumours proliferate, differentiate and die. The genes which control their proliferation are becoming better known, and this Workshop has shown the importance of ras genes in this process. The point has also been made within the Workshop that ras expression may influence the movement out of the proliferative state into a differentiation pathway in certain tumour cells. In this paper I wish to discuss the importance of cell death in tumour biology, and to describe some experiments which indicate that expression of ras and other oncogenes may play a role in determining the death of cells also.
