Abstract
A theoretical discussion is given of the conditions for turning on a thyristor by the accumulation of charge in its bases caused by short-duration external excitation or triggering pulses. The concept of a critical charge for this process is defined and justified and the concept of an effective charge accumulated in the thyristor bases is introduced. Charge “effectiveness” coefficients are estimated as a function of the thyristor parameters, the distribution of charge between bases, and the distributions of carriers within the bases. Simple approximate formulas, suitable for practical calculations, are given in the paper.
