Any study of biology, even a most cursory one, is almost certain to touch on the subject of inorganic cations. Sodium and potassium are, of course, of great importance to living cells by virtue of their respective predominance in extracellular and intracellular fluids. Physiological solutions are not as rich in calcium, but the extreme biological significance of this divalent cation to plant and animal organisms has been a scientific truism for many years; for calcium is clearly implicated both in the basic organization of biological systems and in physicochemical reactions involved with many cellular functions.
