Fundamental Concepts

  • Niels Jonassen

Both in everyday life and in more technical contexts one is often faced with phenomena or problems that can be meaningfully explained only if we assume the existence of a type of physical force different from the classical ones like gravity, friction, or elastic forces. This type of force is involved when photocopies stick together, when a television screen gets dirty, or when the expensive new hairdo is unmanageable. The type of force active in these cases is called an electric force, and we explain its presence by attributing a certain property to the materials or bodies on which the force is acting. This particular property is called the electric charge.
