Abstract

With the recent development of nonpharmacological treatments for headache in children (e.g., Labbe & Williamson, 1983, 1984) has come an increased interest in the psychological and physiological bases of pediatric migraine and tension headache. Although much is known about headache in adults (Williamson, 1981), very little is known about headache in children. This chapter summarizes the current data related to the diagnosis, assessment, incidence, and etiology of childhood migraine and tension headache. The chapter concludes with two case descriptions of typical cases of pediatric migraine and tension headache. For a more complete discussion of the medical and psychological treatment of headaches in children, the reader may wish to refer to Golden (1982) and Hoelscher and Lichstein (1984).
