Abstract

Although it is obvious to any student of child development that behavior, whether “normal” or “abnormal,” must be examined within a developmental context, it is only recently that child psychiatry and clinical child psychology have paid more than lip service to this notion. Both theory and nomenclature were originally adapted from work with adults, and the important changes in behavior and cognitive capacity that occur as a function of physical maturation and psychological development were largely overlooked. Instead, attempts were made to extend adult models downward, and theories of adult psychopathology were unsuccessfully adapted to childhood problems.
