The Arrows of Time

  • Benjamin Gal-Or

Space and time are the most fundamental ideas of the scientist’s picture of the world, and also of the language in which we all describe our thoughts and sensations. We use the concepts of space and time to “relate” ourselves to world phenomena that we and other people observe and to “verify” that what other people report to us as “their observations” are “the same phenomena.” The agreement obtained by this “procedure” portrays certain consistencies and regularities which, in turn, enable us to generate reliable theories, to plan our lives and even to make successful “predictions” about an increasing number of “psychological”, “social”, “biological” and “physical” phenomena. The success of this “process” may encourage some of us to believe in the self-consistency of our theories and in the existence of one and the same reality.
