Nature, Origin and Evolution of Lamprophyre Melts

Petrogenetic theories for lamprophyres are legion, largely of historical interest, and are reviewed by Rock (1977,1984,1986,1987a,1989a), R.H.Mitchell (1986) and Bergman (1987). This chapter concentrates on: (1) the nature of lamprophyre liquids; (2) genetic unity and diversity; (3) the probability that lamprophyres represent primary melts (Appendix B), or parent melts to a range of more evolved (intermediate-felsic) rock-types. Admittedly, little more can be done at present than posing some fairly intractable questions and outlining critical genetic constraints; satisfactory answers will have to await further work.
