Digital pulses are affected by transmission systems in the following ways:
  • They are attenuated along the line.

  • The transmission line acts as a low-pass filter, blocking high frequencies.

  • Different frequencies within pulses travel at different rates causing phase distortion of the pulse.

  • Spreading of the pulses, causing them it to interfere with other pulses.

  • Mismatches on the line cause reflections (and thus ‘ghost pulses’).
