Photomechanical Effects in Photochromic Systems

Abstract

The general problem to be considered in the present paper concerns the possibility of inducing reversible photomechanical effects in a photochromic polymer on account of conformational changes of chromophores and neighbouring segments. The photochemical reactions used in these experiments are based upon the reversible trans-cis isomerization of aromatic azo-compounds (1) and of stilbene derivatives (2) Particularly suitable is the ring opening/closure reaction followed by cis-trans isomerization of spirobenzopyran derivatives.
