Light-Induced Electron Transfer and Electrogenic Reactions in the bc Complex of Photosynthetic Purple Bacteria Rhodobacter Sphaeroides

  • Chapter
Molecular Biology of Membrane-Bound Complexes in Phototrophic Bacteria

Abstract

In chromatophores of non-sulphur purple bacteria, the cyclic electron transport chain consist of a photosynthetic reaction center (RC) and bc complex (ubiquinol: cytochrome c2 oxidoreductase). Following light exposure, the former reduces the ubiquinone and oxidizes the cytochrome c2 as the latter subsequently oxidizes the ubiquinol and reduces the cytochrome c2. During functioning of this cycle, the electron transport is coupled to the generation of electrochemical potential difference of hydrogen ions needed to drive ATP synthesis [1–4].
