Receptors, G-Proteins, and Egg Activation

  • Chapter

Abstract

At fertilization, an intricate series of signals passes back and forth between the sperm and egg. This paper concerns the signal from the sperm that causes the egg to activate and begin development. Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that this process involves a guanine nucleotide binding protein (G-protein) in the egg membrane, and perhaps a related receptor as well. In this respect. the process of sperm-egg interaction may have a close resemblance to the interaction of certain neurotransmitters and hormones with their target cells.
