Abstract
The creation of technically and economically feasible biomass-based energy and chemical systems will require the effective coupling of existing technologies with new scientific concepts. Concentrated interdisciplinary research efforts supported by large-scale funding, from both governmental and industrial sources, are being brought to bear upon the problem of assessing the total biomass potential and how it may be realized.
