Advances in the Sokoloff Tube

  • Chapter
Acoustical Holography

Abstract

The Sokoloff Tube, embracing modern electron tube technology, has emerged as one of the most sensitive yet simple high speed image converters for two dimensional display of ultrasound fields.1 A number of studies have identified the limitations of the tube as regards sensitivity and image forming capabilities.2 The principal limitations are 1) a limited effective aperture when achieving maximum detail resolution, and 2) a constraint on the maximum size of the imaging surface that permits maximum detail resolution. The work reported here describes two technological advances that have, for all practical purposes, eliminated these factors.
