Do Class II Major Histocompatibility Molecules Function as Signal Transducers during B Lymphocyte Activation?

  • Chapter
H-2 Antigens

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 144))

Abstract

The studies described here address the hypothesis that class II molecules (Ia) serve not only as restriction elements for cognate T cell:B cell interaction, but also as signal transducers involved in B cell activation. We have tested this hypothesis by studying modulation of B cell physiology by anti-Ia antibodies. Specifically, we have assessed the ability of these antibodies to induce “second” messenger generation and to modulate cell proliferative and differentiative responses to LPS and anti IgM antibodies.
