Role of H-2 Antigen Induction in the Rejection of Thyroid and Pancreatic Islet Allografts
Three basic observations on the rejection of mouse endocrine allografts are used to support a model of graft rejection in which the induction of the expression of H-2 major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens is required. First, we found a close spatial relationship between the foci of T cell infiltration and the areas of the graft expressing allo-MHC antigens during rejection. Second, cultured endocrine allografts disparate from the recipient in MHC antigens were rejected only when they were associated with inflamatory processes mediated by minor histocompatibility antigens. And third, immunization of B6 mice to bml antigens was required for the rejection of uncultured bml thyroids, but this immunization had no effect on cultured bml grafts.
