Abstract
In January of this year seven large groups1−7) submitted letters of intent expressing the desire to do experiments at the new large electron positron storage ring LEP which is under construction at CERN. Six of these groups presented proposals for new detectors. These detectors are considerably larger and more ambitious than those operating presently at e+e− storage rings. In order to understand better their design it is helpful to have first a brief look at the expected properties of LEP and the physics one hopes to do with it.
