Enzymatic Differences between Short-Lived and Long-Lived Drosophila Strains
One of the phenomena characterizing age ing of the organism as well as of diploid cells in culture is an increase of the activity of lysosomal enzymes, among others of the acid phosphatase EC 184.108.40.206. On the other hand the activity of alkaline phosphatase,EC 220.127.116.11. does not change in ageing diploid cells (1), although its activity increased in hydrocortisone-treated diploid cells with prolonged lifespan (2). However, the activity of this enzyme considerably alters during ontogenesis. The alkaline nhosnhatase is active in all cells in the course of early stages of embryogenesis and it is undetectable during intermediate period in most tissues. The alkaline phosphatase again becomes active at later stages in certain tissues (3). Remarkable alkaline phosphatase activity was also found at early states of wound healing in fibroblastic cells, but the activity level of normal fibroblasts was very low (4).
