A Temperature Error in the Gravimetric Determinations of Adsorption Isotherms
Adsorption isotherms of a nonporous hydroxylated silica at liquid-nitrogen temperatures are compared. Differences between the isotherms are shown to be due to a difference in temperature between liquid nitrogen and the sample, in the gravimetric method. The temperature difference and the method by which it was measured are reported. It is shown that the temperature difference can be eliminated by use of a special hangdown tube, and a small modification to the Cahn RG Electrobalance used. It is shown that temperature differences between the sample and the environment can be avoided by the use of vapors at room temperature.
