Deep Inelastic Scattering

Abstract

Deep inelastic electron and muon scattering experiments, first performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator, have given a tantalizing glimpse of the inner structure of the proton and the neutron. The results of these experiments agree well with the hypothesis that the nucleon consists of more elementary constituents, called partons. This conclusion is reinforced by the results of deep inelastic neutrino scattering experiments, first obtained from the bubble chamber “Gargamelle” at CERN. The electron, muon, and neutrino experiments are being repeated at the higher energies now available at Fermilab and CERN, and there are tentative plans to achieve even higher energies by the construction of electron—proton colliding beam facilities. The first experiments at SLAC probed the structure of the nucleon to within a resolution of about 1/50 of the nucleon radius, while with a colliding beam machine one could hope in principle to achieve an order of magnitude smaller, though in practice the low event rate will be a severe limitation.
