Abstract
Ever since its introduction by Dirac in his classic paper on the quantum theory of radiationa,(1) the phase of the quantized electromagnetic field has been the subject of intensive studies and even some controversies. Extensive reviews of these problems with emphasis on the proper mathematical description have been given by Carruthers and Nieto(2) and by Paul.(3)
