Abstract
A brief survey of recent experimental work on metal vapors at our laboratories is given. Results of chemiluminescence of group Ia and IIb metal atoms excited by a Lewis-Rayleigh nitrogen afterglow are presented. For group Ia atoms, we have found evidence that the exciting species in the afterglow is N2(A) rather than N2(X)v as previously proposed. A demonstration of spin conservation during collisions of the second kind is seen in the excitation of group IIb atoms and relative quenching of electronically excited nitrogen states is noted.
