Interaction between Colloidal Particles

Abstract

Colloidal particles in air or liquids are mostly charged, owing either to the adsorption of charge carriers (ions or electrons) or to the dissociation of polar groups at the interface. In a colloidal dispersion in water all the particles of the same kind will have the same surface charge (and surface potential), if the surface charge is due to dissociation of polar groups or adsorption of potential determining ions. In polymer latexes, where the charge arises from hydrolysis of polar groups at the interface, the surface charge density of different particles may vary. Nevertheless, the electrostatic interaction is still a repulsive one. However, in nonpolar liquids or in air, dispersed particles can even have charges of different signs.
