Stability Analysis of a Single-Mode, Inhomogeneously Broadened Laser

The existence of self-pulsing and chaotic instabilities in a ring laser with a homogeneously broadened atomic transition is a well established theoretical property of the single-mode laser model, as discussed in the early studies by Haken1 and Risken and collaborators2. Up until now, attempts to demonstrate and occur rence of instabilities in such laser systems have not met with experimental success, in part, probably, because of the stringent requirements that the gain and cavity parameters must satisfy in order to meet the instability conditions, and in part because of the stabilizing action played by the cavity transverse beam profile, as shown in a recent contribution by Lugiato and Milani3.
