Cooling Atoms with a Frequency Chirped Laser

The thermal motion of atoms often limits the resolution of spectroscopy. Even with the various non-linear, Doppler-free spectroscopies, resolution can still be limited by 2nd order Doppler effect and transit time broadening. In 1975 it was suggested that radiation pressure from a near resonant laser could be used to reduce the thermal motion of atoms . This technique was first used to cool trapped ions in 1978 .
