Isolating Undischarged and Discharged Nematocysts from Acontiate Sea Anemones

The ability to obtain large quantities of isolated nematocysts provides material for the study of problems related to nematocyst discharge mechanisms and for the isolation and analysis of nematocyst toxins and capsule components (see Chapters 46, 47, and 48). To date, no satisfactory method has been developed for hydra. The procedure described is for isolating pure nematocyst suspensions from the acontia of some sea anemones.
