Organization and Expression of Papillomavirus Genomes

The Papovaviridae

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

Although the papillomaviruses were discovered early in this century (Ciuffo, 1907; Shope, 1933), studies of their molecular properties progressed extremely slowly until the last decade. The lack of in vitro systems for virus cultivation has obviously been a retarding factor. Due to their morphological and physical properties, the papillomaviruses were assumed to be closely related to the other members of the papovavirus group, SV40 and polyomavirus (Melnick et al., 1974; Matthews, 1982). It was, however, recognized that both the papillomavirus particle (Strauss et al.,1950; Finch and Klug, 1965) and the viral chromosome (Crawford and Crawford, 1963; Favre et al.,1975; Gissmann and zur Hausen, 1976; Orth et al.,1977) were significantly larger than those of other papovaviruses.
