Abstract
The session on Data Base Systems covered a variety of computer applications in biomedical research and clinical medicine. These relate to three large systems (the 3M Company, Chemical Abstracts Service1, and Permanente Medical Group), and two relatively small systems (Institute for Living and Boston City Hospital). One of the large and two of the small systems are directly related to optimizing the health care of patient populations. In the case of the Boston City Hospital, which participates in the NIH-funded PROPHET system, research is a primary objective.
