Abstract

Poisoning of the ortho-parahydrogen conversion catalyst by commercial hydrogen gas impurities and proper activation procedure has in the past caused considerable concern at hydrogen liquefaction installations across the country. Consequently, this study has investigated the permanent and temporary poisoning of the most effective conversion catalyst by methane, ethylene, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, butyl mercaptan, and chlorine, and has determined the effect of varying time and temperature of activation on the final activity of this catalyst.
