Martensitic Transformation Products and Mechanical Properties of Austenitic Stainless Steels at Low Temperatures

A mechanical properties test program has been completed between 300° and 4°K on several annealed austenitic stainless steels. The extensive results are in the process of being correlated for final publication. However, some of the properties show an interesting anomalous behavior and are worthy of preliminary discussion because of their special relation to the martensitic transformation characteristics of the alloys. The results are based on analysis of the tensile strength, notched tensile strength, and their resulting ratio for AISI-304L sheet and also X-ray analysis of the accompanying transformation characteristics.
