Flux Jumping and Degradation in Superconducting Solenoids
Experiments with superconducting solenoids in the past two years have revealed a number of problems which face the coil designer. The two most important of these are the degradation effect, that is, the failure of the solenoid to carry the current as expected from short-sample tests on the winding material, and the generation of high voltages internal to the coil, due to the injection of resistance during the transition to the normal state. Both of these problems are associated with the entry of the coil into the normal state.
