Abstract
In a beam-dump experiment, a beam of high-energy protons is dumped into a dense block of heavy material, in order to absorb the hadronic cascade as quickly as possible. The short decay path minimizes the background of conventional leptons from the decay of known long-lived particles (π, K, Λ, ...), thus facilitating the search for penetrating stable particles, produced either directly in the proton-nucleus interaction, or originating from the decay of short-lived particles (lifetime ≲ 102212;11 s). Leptons produced in this way are referred to as prompt.
