Abstract

Many reports have documented the lack of association between cell transformation in vitro and tumor induction in vivo by tumor viruses. It has also been established that cells transformed in tissue culture by many viruses are not oncogenic when inoculated into syngeneic hosts. The reasons for this lack of association are poorly understood. By comparing the tumor-inducing properties of adenovirus type 2 (Ad2) and SV40 transformed cells, we have developed data that offer a possible explanation for the discrepancy between in vivo and in vitro oncogenicity of tumor viruses and the cells they transform in tissue culture.
