Abstract
This report has three main goals. The first is to summarize the major components of the advanced atherosclerotic plaque as seen microscopically and to document some of the relatively simple and inexpensive quantitative approaches to micromorphometry of these components. The second is to present a summary of the evidence indicating that the microarchitecture of the plaque is very important in understanding the potential clinical effects of a lesion. The third is to summarize a few of the preliminary quantitative microscopic observations which have been reported from the study of the pathobiological determinants of atherosclerosis in youth and to indicate their possible importance in predicting the potential for progression to clinically important disease.
