Abstract

The purpose of these experiments was to apply the knowledge gained from experiments in animals to understanding the controls of water intake in healthy men. The unique advantage of studying thirst in humans is that the measurement of physiological parameters can be combined with the simultaneous assessment of subjective sensations associated with thirst and fluid intake. In the series of experiments to be described, factors involved in the initiation and termination of drinking are considered as well as changes in thirst which are associated with aging.
