Biofeedback-Assisted Control of Heart Period Variability

Abstract

In the last decade, we have conducted a series of experiments which were mainly focused at the modification of instantaneous variations of heart period (heart period variability, HPV). Historically speaking, this was suggested by casual observations in patients with sinus tachycardia who sometimes exhibited an exaggerated HPV during the prodromal phase of their attacks. Early experiments with normal subjects were aimed at the stabilization of instantaneous HPV by visual feedback techniques and the exploration of possible concomitant changes in cardiac-respiratory interaction. These findings are summarized in the first part of this chapter. Later in the chapter, we examine the clinical effectiveness of this approach with respect to changes in cardiac-respiratory interaction, control strategies used for HP stabilization, and symptoms of patients with heart-related disorders.
