Abstract

Vaccination has been such a major factor in the control of many virus diseases during the last five decades that it is often forgotten how successful vaccines have been, not only in human medicine but also in veterinary medicine. Diseases such as poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, German measles and yellow fever are now rare events in developed countries and smallpox has been eradicated from all countries of the world. In the veterinary field, foot-and-mouth disease, Newcastle disease, Marek’s disease and rinderpest are now largely controlled by vaccination.
