Effect of Lithium on Acute Myelocytic Leukemia Cells in Tissue Culture — a Preliminary Study

  • Chapter
Lithium Effects on Granulopoiesis and Immune Function

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 127))

Abstract

Lithium was observed to increase the number of peripheral neutro-phils in hematologically normal individuals (Shopsin et al., 1971; Bille et al., 1975) and in several primary neutropenic conditions (Tisman and Show-Jen, 1977; Barrett, et al., 1977). When this effect is analysed in people receiving lithium for psychiatric reasons, it appeared to involve predominantly the myeloid cell line, though platelet counts were also increased (Bille et al., 1975). Lithium apparently causes increased neutrophil production by increasing colony stimulating activity (Turner et al., 1978).
