Landolt’s Club in Some Primitive Fishes

Abstract

In 1871, Landolt described a cell process in the retina of certain urodele amphibians which lay between the nuclei of visual cells and extended as far as the outer junctional zone. He thought that these club shaped processes were not of neural origin, but that they were in direct communication with the ‘supporting’ tissue of the retina. Subsequent investigations, notably those of Ranvier (1882) and Dogiel (1883), showed that the clubs arose from bipolar cells.
