Au cours des dernières années, il est apparu clairement que pour comprendre le mécanisme de la transduction, il était indispensable d’acquérir des connaissances supplémentaires sur l’organisation moléculaire des membranes qui forment les segments externes des bâtonnets. Aujourd’hui, les recherches sur les photorécepteurs font intervenir, notamment, les rayons X et la microscopie électronique (Blasie et al., 1969, Chabre et al., 1972, Chen et Hubbell, 1973) ainsi que les techniques les plus raffinées de la spectroscopie (Shichi, 1971).
