Abstract

Elastic neutron scattering experiments on sodium nitrite in transverse electric fields are reported. The results are interpreted with the Ishibashi phenomenological free energy. Although no true Lifshitz point is possible, the analysis shows that the incommensurate phase can be narrowed by a suitable perturbation and can disappear at a triple point.
