Abstract

If the name “CASTOR” is used, then it generally denotes the production process for a special development line of casks, as the word contains the initials of “CASTING, TRANSPORT and STORAGE”.

The origin lies in the year 1975, when GNS designed the first transport casks based on ductile cast iron.

The reasons for the choice of this material were:

  • suitability for serial production of significant numbers of casks

  • homogeneous body without welds

  • good shock resistance combined with high fracture toughness at low temperatures

  • easy machining

  • high thermal conductivity

  • acceptable costs.

In the following presentation, the experimental background and the current development status are explained.
