Abstract
The liquid structures of S and Se have been proposed (Ref. 1, 2, 3) to be equilibrium mixtures of linear polymer molecules and eight-membered monomer rings. The experimental phenomena observed in S which stimulated Gee’s (1) proposal and its formulation by Tobolsky and Eisenberg (Ref. 2, 3) were the temperature dependence of the viscosity and heat capacity in the region of 159°C and the solubility or lack of solubility of various forms of S in solvents such as CS2. Further, the structures of the highly molecular crystalline phases of S and Se have strongly influenced thought on the possible molecular forms in the liquid.
