Abstract

Previous studies from this laboratory (Hunter et al., 1982) demonstrated that LHRH analogues bind specifically to purified rat but not mouse Leydig cells. During short term (less than 24 h) these analogues stimulate steroidogenesis in the rat Leydig cells (Hunter et al., 1982; Sharpe & Cooper, 1982; Sharpe et al., 1982) but long term (in excess of 24 h) effects are inhibitory on LH-stimulated steroidogenesis (Hunter et al., 1982; Massicotte et al., 1981). Further studies have now been carried out to determine the effects and roles of cyclic AMP, Ca 2+ in LHRH agonist action during stimulation of steroidogenesis (Sullivan & Cooke 1984 a,b) and to determine the effects of LHRH agonist on cholesterol side chain cleavage, enzyme activity (Sullivan & Cooke, 1984c) and size of the Leydig cells (Aldred & Cooke, unpublished).
