Abstract
The discovery of different families of peptides in the brain (neurotensin, substance P, bombesin, the so-called gastrointestinal hormones, the opioids, etc.) and the fact that these principles are present in particularly high concentrations in the hypothalamus (Fernstrom et al., 1980; Frederickson, 1980; Said, 1980; Snyder, 1980) have prompted several investigations on the possible role these principles exert on the control of anterior pituitary function. Evidence is rapidly accumulating which suggests that many of these peptides may play a physiological role as modulators of the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary system (see McCann, 1980 for references).
