Abstract
The present concept on the secretory process in anterior pituitary cells is based on a large body of informations among which the contribution of electron microscopy was primordial. This concept follows the model formerly proposed by Palade for the exocrine pancreas and thereafter applied to several endocrine cells which secrete various polypeptides or proteins (see rev. Palade, 1975, Farquhar, 1981, Farquhar and Palade, 1981). There is now a complete agreement that the secretory process is a dynamic phenomenon which involves two main components: 1. the secretory protein itself which undergoes an intracellular transit before to be exported and 2. the intracellular membranes which limit the intracellular compartments where the secretory material is sequestered during its intracellular transit. These two aspects of the secretory process will be briefly reviewed.
